Lighter tackle

Did anyone else read the article in this month's Midwest Outdoors magazine about using lighter tackle to catch (more) muskies? I guess the author claims he outfishes lots of people using 14lb mono and lighter tackle.

Some of it makes sense, but 14lb mono having plenty of strength pulling in a huge ski? Anyone's thoughts?

My guess is if he is catching more, they are smaller (less than 20 lbs). It also is hard on the fish if you are using to light a tackle. It requires the fish to become extremely tired before landing because you have to play them much longer. Also, more likely a muskie will break off with a lure stuck in the mouth, not very good for the fish.

It will be easier on the fish and less heartbreak for you using the tried and true heavy equipment. Imagine using 14 lb mono and you hook a 40 lber, who will probably win? I would bet on the fish. My suggestion, stick with the big stuff.

not saying that it can be done on a regular basis but i got a 48 inch ski last spring on 6lb test and it swam through every weed patch it could find. just depends on how the fish is hooked and how good of a drag system you got on your reel. no i wouldnt use this on perpose, i wouldnt use anything under 30 lb for that matter but it can be done.

I agree with the thinner line not being a good alternative for fishing muskies for all of the reasons stated above. But, I had heard of a guy using 80lb Vanish for his leaders and claiming he had much better action with his jerkbaits, and more strikes, also he had stated that he had yet to lose a fish to a bite off with this setup. I would be curious to see other peoples thoughts on this!

fishing with a small zebco combo (the 5'6" kinda that you get in the 20 dollar packages) and using a really small mepps spinner i caught a nice 15# muskie fishing inbetween my dad and uncle (both using muskie rods and huge baits). i then wanted to switch baits right after and went with a really small rapala and had on another muskie near 20lbs. got off because my dad couldn't grab onto it, cuz the back of the fish was too big.
i was only using maybe 8# test at most and both the fish didn't break my line. my dad and uncle were both fully loaded for muskies and didn't get one fish that day.
i was about 12 years old then, maybe it was just my day in the sun but i will always remember it. i figured it was worth postin in this line conversation, that small lures/lines will work in some isntances.

    • As a recovering machinist, I can appreciate that.  If the spec is 0.001 - 0.0015, then clearly the correct measurement is 0.00125, duh…
    • I just figured that it is easy enough to just get a 3 bank so when the boat is not in use I can keep all 3 batteries charged. I have not bough a charger yet, maybe I will give it some more thought. Edit: After thinking this over, with the size, weight, and heat output of the charger (as well as the cost) I think it makes sense to just buy a 2 bank charger, I have a smaller charger i can use on the starting battery when the boat is sitting at home. Forgive me, for i am a retired engineer and I have to obsess over everything...
    • Congrats on the motor!  I think you’ll like it.   I can’t say much on the charger location but I’ve seen them under the lid in back compartments and under center rod lockers.  160 degrees is more than I expected to hear.   Curious why you’re opting for a 3 bank charger with a 24V trolling motor.  Unless you don’t feel you be running you big motor enough to keep that battery up as well?
    • I did buy an Minnkota Ulterra, thanks for the recommendations. I had a bunch of Cabela"s bucks saved up, which helped. Now i need to get an onboard battery charger. Where do you guys mount these things in your boat? The manufacturer I am looking at {Noco genius) says tht their 3-bank charger will run at 160 degrees, seems like a lot of heat in an enclosed compartment? Thanks for any input on this.
    • You're very lucky a troop of Sea Monkey's didn't carry you away.
    • Wasn't terrible at a state park beach. Antelope island maybe.  I wouldn't recommend it as a beach destination tho.  Figured I was there, I'm getting in it.
    • The water looked and smelled disgusting with hundreds of thousands of birds sh*tting in there.  About as gross as the Salton Sea. When I duck hunted there I didn't even want to touch the water.
    • It's kinda gross with the algae in the summer but I got in it anyway.  Wanted to see the increased bouyancy at work.  You can kinda tuck yourself into a ball and you'll just float with your head above water.  When dry off you look diamond encrusted with the salt.
    • We went to the flats too. I dipped a tire on the rental car onto it just to say I’ve been there, but it was still pretty soft from winter melt. After seeing some moron in a BMW suv get dragged out of the muck I had no intention of repeating his stupidity.
    • I've been out on the flats. It's like being on a different planet
