Lake Ice Production Formula??

Does anyone know if there is a formula for how fast lakes produce ice? I was always told by my grandpa that at 0 degress F every 12 hours a lake produces 1 inch of ice. Im sure that was just old timer logic and was wondering if there was an actual formula out there.

Check out this link, I've been working with this chart for about 2 weeks and found it to be pretty close to what I've measured daily on Gull Lake.

i find your chart rather interesting, somehow I thought there would be significantly higher numbers but I guess i never took into account how much ice is already there. Thanks for sharing

It is old timer logic. If you think about it, the ice forms from the bottom, and the thicker the ice, the slower it forms.

Thus, it is not a liner rate as you grandpa has stated.

However, I would bet that his estimate is close for new ice. Prolly the first six to eight inches.
