tip up circle hook

Tried out some circle hooks this weekend, what size are you using for fathead minnows> i use a gamakatsu size 6 octopus and caught 4 fish with them. didn't miss any but these were smaller fish. I have read and watched shows and they are perched in the corner of the mouth. That never happened with any of the fish I caught. Mine were either in the gill or cought the front of the throat back by the gill. these were small walleye and a northern. As soon as i saw the flag I would go to it and take the fish when it tugged.

Circle hooks are best used in a tight line presentation, where on a tip up it usually lets out line fairly easily......Won't say it can't be done, but the whole catching in the corner of the mouth comes from the line being tight when the fish eats and swims away the hook catches on the corner of the mouth as the line pulls out....

Just by picking up the line, holding it in your hand and letting the fish tighten the line the hook should and usually does slide out and hook inside the edge of the mouth. If the line is tugged at all or a normal hook set is given it will mess up the hook up significantly. This is themost common mistake made by people not used to circle hooks. I use circle hooks all the time under my tip ups and have had good luck with them. Just remind yourself to hold the line, let it snugg up, and just slowly pull in line. the hook design works best if you go slow and keep steady tension. In the original post a question was brought up about hook size and fatheads, I cant really help there as I usually target pike and use large shinners or sucker chubs.
