rodbuilder
Hey all, I was out fishing yesterday morning. I got sick of casting so I decided to do a little trolling. I put on a firetiger colored deep diving Ernie and was in about 20 feet of water. I didn't get 100 yards when I felt a light strike. I shut the motor down and reeled in this dead weight thinking I had picked up a branch. When I got it to the boat, it was a 2.5 Lb. walleye! I couldn't believe it...on a 6-7 inch muskie crank! I never did get any muskies to hit but I thought I would share that with you and ask if anyone else has encountered anything like this?
Guest
Yes, I've had it happen. Can you believe crappie no bigger than the plug? That's happened, too. In aggressive mood, just about any species is willing to commit suicide.
DUCKJ
ive had this happen alot this spring on mill lacs. my biggest eye on a musky plug was 32" but it only weighed about 7 lbs. the head dwarfed the body. still gets your heart pumpin when they hit.happy huntingduck
musky hunter
I have caught several big walleyes on musky baits, including an 8 lb. class walleye on a 1 ounce Gapen safety pin with a giant twister tail. It had no trouble eating it.
AaronM
I've had this happen to me before and I've come to a cunclusion, small smallmouth are sucicidal. They hit cranks the same size. Crazy little buggers. Gives you something to do though. Good luck fishin everyone.
kslipsinker
This is one that I don't like to share, but here goes. I was throwing a Mepps Muskie Killer one day and had a pretty good strike. It did,t feel too big, and once I got it up to the boat, I couldn't believe what I saw. A big old bullhead! Had to be well over 2 pounds, hooked with 2 of the 3 hooks on the treble hook. musky hunter
I guess the topic wasn't limited to just walleyes caught going for muskies. I have caught numerous smallies on muskie surface plugs, particularly frog style surface plug with propellers on both ends. I've taken smallmouth on that plug up to 22", but numerous ones 16-20". Smallmouth are very aggressive.
musky hunter
Actually, now that I think about it, I've caught a whole lot more alternative species fishing for muskies than muskies, and by a wide margin!
