Another coyote down!

Recommended Posts

I took out a friend tonight who wanted to try his hand at coyote hunting but unfortunately he wasn't able to put one down.

We went out around 11 P.M. and went to one of our best spots from last year. It's a North/South 80 acre hayfield with some thick brush to the East and a woodlot and field to the West. The wind was out of the SW on the way in but after I put out the caller and decoy I noticed the slight breeze was out of the East. We set up along the East side of the field with the caller 50 yards SW of us. I went through the usual routine of distress for 15 minutes then did a few long howls with no takers. I was starting to get worried that nothing would when I was scanning the far West side of the field with the binocs and see one standing over there. I let Jeff know there was one over there but he forgot his binoculars in the truck and couldn't see him. I put on distress real low and it soon started trotting in. The coyote came into about 150 yards and was directly West of the caller when it stopped. I kept telling him where it was but he didn't see it. The coyote must have got a wiff of something, turned and bugged out. Jeff finally said he could see it but when it stopped at about 180 yards I asked if he was on it and he said take it. So I did. He had his adjustable objective turned too low he said and couldn't pick it up in the scope.

I hit him a little high and had to catch up to him and finish it off but looked to be a pretty healthy male.

We called 2 more blank sets and at the 4th set of the night, Jeff managed to take a big boar coon that ventured a little too close to his AR. Got real dark as some low clouds rolled in so we called it a night.

This nice male makes it 12 coyotes for me this year and another personal best. I'm thinking of running up North Saturday to try for bobcats agian and the up to Jeff's cabin,on Monday near Barnum to try a little calling during the day for coyotes and probably take the shotguns and lights for fox at night.
