2011 ends with four more!

Recommended Posts

Well we ended with a bang, or four this morning and what a great season it's been so far. We're way ahead of our past seasons numbers at this point of the year for coyotes (9 so far)and closing in on my best year for grays(21 so far), which was 23 several years ago. The fox hunting has really been helped by the lack of snow I think. Because we can't scan in Wisconsin, it's really helped to have the leaves still exposed so you can really hear them charging in.

We talked it over last night and decided that tonight would be our last night for fox for a couple weeks. Mitch wants to do a little more fishing and snowboarding and we've got the full moon coming up in a little over a week so we'll be after the coyotes agian and I still have a bobcat tag to try and fill.

We started the night at some new spots quite a ways from home that we hadn't hunted before but had scouted last summer.

1st set: We had a light SE wind tonight and we set up along a N/S trail with Mitch watching the West and me, the East. I started the caller and let it play a few times, stopping every couple minutes and soon heard one coming through the brush. I hit my light and could see him standing out about 25 yards. He looked to be behind some brush so I let him start working downwind and when he was clear I let loose and rolled him. Nice big male.

2nd and 3rd sets were blanks. Spots looked good with tracks around but nothing showed.

4th set: We set up at the intersection of two trails, with Mitch covering two and me the others. I started the same way with distress on and off and while the caller was off I heard Mitch lip squeek. I soon heard one coming in from behind me so I turned the caller back on and soon heard him shoot and after a short chase through the brush we caught up to another nice male.

5th set: We set up another intersection of two trails. I was watching the East and Mitch the West. I started with nuthatch on and off and after 10 minutes went to pup distress. Nothing showed for about 5 minutes so I shut it off and listened. I thought I heard something to my right so I hit the light and saw one standing out about 25 yards behind some thick brush. I heard Mit lip squeeking agian and assumed he saw the one I was looking at. I turned on the pup distress agian pretty loud and soon heard him shoot. Scared the heck out of me and the fox as it runs back another 10 yards or so and just stands there. I've still got the light on him and it's locked up now at about 35 yards. I shut the caller off and put on nuthatch distress agian and here it comes. Right down the trail and almost in my lap. I made a 2 poor shots(shot behind it) and hit it in the back legs. Took him down but not real proud of those shots. I hate to have them suffer at all. There such a neat little animal. Mitch ended up with a nice male that came in behind me and mine was also a male. We called it a night and a year after this set, which turned out to be a double. I hope everyone has a safe and happy new year's eve tonight and we'll post up if we have any luck next weekend on the coyotes. Good luck to everyone venturing out.
