pikeguy2003
Decided to scrap the rest of the bowhunting season. It looked like it was going to be way too windy to go to the stand, so I grabbed the the dog and took her out for the second time this year. I used to be hard core, but the dog is old and tired and the vet says I shouldn't really hunt her anymore. Within 5 minutes of getting out of the truck she flushed two hens and a rooster. Of course the rooster got up behind a patch of dogwoods and didn't give me a clean shot. We watched where they landed and headed in that direction. They flushed again well before we were even remotely close enough for a shot. We crossed the frozen drainage ditch and worked our way back toward the barn. The dog wanted to keep crossing the fence but I have played this game on this drainage ditch before. I just kept slowly walking as the cover keeps getting narrower and narrower as you get closer to the barn. Eventually there was no more real estate and the bird flushed. It was a really nice rooster, which I managed to fold cleanly on the second shot. The dog took off and by the time I hopped the fence the dog was coming back with the bird. It was if she was telling me that she wasn't dead yet, and still had her game. She dropped the bird in my hand and as I looked at it, I noticed that one of the tail feathers was snow white on the end for about 3/8 of an inch. None of the other tail feathers were out of the ordinary. I shot a bird about 5 years ago on this farm and multiple tail feathers had this feature. I was wondering if anyone else has seen anything like this? Luckily I saved the whole tail from the bird from 5 years ago. I am going to preserve both of them, and I think I will mount them side by side in a glass case. Really glad that it was too windy to deer hunt. Pretty cool deal! 123fish
Kind of interesting that you bring this up. Saturday morning I shot a rooster that had about four pure white primaries on each wing and had two of it's tail feathers that were pure white also. It also had those group of fluffy feathers on it's lower back flecked with pure white feathers that really looked cool. It had pretty long almost translucent spurs that were off white and yellow feet. One of the guys I was hunting with used to be a taxidermist so I gave it to him and hope he makes a flying mount out of it which would look pretty neat with those white primaries in each wing. The other guys took some pics of it and said they turned out pretty nice so if I get some I'll try to post them up.
