Newbie to Muskies

Recommended Posts

I just bought a Muskie rod for real cheap and a new Abu C4 reel for $45 at a sportsman show. It was a deal I couldn't pass on. It will be a good catfish/planer board set-up and I also want to learn about fishing for Muskies.
I have only fished for these beasts about 4 times in my life. I know little to nothing about Muskies.
What kind of lures would you recommend starting off with, just the "obvious" basics. Bucktails for sure, but how about colors, etc...? My budget is really restricted and with these lures running $10-$15 a piece, it really adds up! Thanks.

Hi CD! As you stated, the bucktail is the place to start for a beginner. Mepps Giant Killers, Harassers, and Eagle Tails to mention a few are all good choices. As for colors; black with a silver blade is a must along w/ a chartruese bucktail. These two color combos will cover most of your needs. I also am very found of purple bucktails.

Some other lures would be a Suick in sucker pattern and a Top Raider in black/orange. I pick both of these as starters because they are easy to use for a beginner.

So, if you have 4 lures in your box when you begin muskie fishing they should be a black bucktail, a chartruese bucktail, a sucker colored Suick, and a blk/org Top Raider. You should be able to get all 4 of these for under $50.00.

Hope this helps and catch a big one!

Try also the Mepps with the orange blade and white hair. For bucktails, I'd be willing to bet the majority come on black, with white being not too far behind.

An old plug again on the market (new manufacturer, but same specs) is the old Cisco Kid. I like the black/silver, but some new colors look interesting, too.

Hey CD,
The suggestions made here are all good ones, but I would also recommend buying
a spinnerbait or two.

They catch fish day or night, fast or slow, shallow or deep....and they don't
cost an arm and a leg. smile.gif
