Rod and Reel

Recommended Posts

I started muskie huntn' about 2 years ago with my brother-in-law in WI. Since then I can't seem to get enough of it. The only thing I seem to be missing is a good quality rod and reel. Right now I mainly use Garcia 5000 series. I don't think it is big enough or fast enough to pull in the bucktails. I want to get a good setup before this season but also don't want to spend too much. Right now I am working on the wife to get a new boat and would have a hard time telling her I need new equipment as well!!! Any help would be apprec. Thanks!

The Abu 6500 is the best reel for the money, I have 8 of them, never had any problems. They go for about $75.00.

The first reel that I bought years ago was the Abu 5000 series reel and a 7' Fenwick. It is now 6'-9", I had a run in with a car door. It still works great! Since then I bought 2 Abu 6500 a couple years ago when Abu Garcia had a $15 mail in rebate, a great deal. Still $75 is a great price.

As for the convincing buying a rod, point out the St.Croix Avid Musky Rod that sells for $210. Then when you get "the look" point out the St. Croix Premier Rod that sells for $120 and say what a great deal. I tried this with my wife. Except I think she knew what I was doing. Or perhaps she needs a muskie setup as well so both of you can have a great time fishing together.

Thanks for the info on the 6500. With the reel being that cheap I don't think she will give me "The Look" an a more expensive reel. As far as fishing she does not get into muskies but loves to fish. Whenever we go up north I find a lake close to a good muskie lake and then I do get the "ah ha".

bnecrush,
FYI-
Before you spend the big bucks smile.gif on a 6500, take a trip down to Spirit Lake Iowa (right accross the boarder) to the Berkley/Pure Fishing Outlet store.
Just got back and picked up 4 C4 6500's for $30 each! They are reconditioned, but basically brand new, just a few scuff marks on em. Well worth the trip down there, but try to go on a weekday or be there right when they open their doors on the weekend for the best deals. The reel bins are to your right as you come through the door smile.gif
Good Luck

Thanks for the help on the reels. Just picked up a 6500 C4 at the St. Paul boat show for $60. Along with that picked up an alumacraft Magnum 175 with the wife's ok even! See ya on the lake!!

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
