Darters and Salmo Zipper

Recommended Posts

I am going to pick up a couple of Salmo Zippers and either Lindy or Salmo Darters tomorrow. For the people who use them, do you recommend a constant jigging motion or a slow up down retrieve followed by pauses? I have never used them, so any suggestions on technique would be helpful. I would also like a recommendation for size.

Thanks

I own quite a few salmo and chubby darters. A fast rip followed by a pause up to a minute. Or if you have ever watched a dying shiner in a tank try to make your bait flutter and die with frequent rests on the bottom. Both styles work great for me but you have to let the fish tell you what they want. Dont get discouraged by seeing fish but not getting bit right away as theese baits generaly keep the smaller fish off your line. I mostly use the smallest one, Can't think of the size off hand. They are great for stained water or when the fish have seen just about everything else on the market. This is one bait you must have confidence in for it to work well.

I usually have them on my "rotation" for my jigging rod. I even use the darter crappie fishing. I will always have a dead stick next to it. No closer than 2' though. Some days you might not get much off the darter or jigging rod in general, but it'll keep the deadstick busy and bring em in.

These responses are why I was asking about techniques. The only reason I am going to try these out is the recent in fisherman magazine that features these for walleye. So I figured I would try something different. The mag also talked about "calling them in" with a rattle or clacking and then moving to a jig tipped with minnow.

As with any magazine driven by advertisements I take everything said with a grain of salt as like to get responses from people who have actually used them, like you all. The noise thing for attraction does make sense to me. I can tell from listening to your techniques that it is going to take me a little time to get the action down.

Thanks,
