Tip ups

It's very similar to bait fishing under a bobber in the summer. I use 35# cortland toothycritter wire leader and berkley leader sleaves for the leader. I spool with 30# powerpro braid, but any braid 20#-60# will work. I use a 1/4 ounce barrel weight and a tiny split shot to stop it. Then I tie directly to the rig. The rig is made of about 15" of leader material. I put a blade spinner above each trebble to make it legal in minnesota. My favorite bait is 8-10" suckers. Now someone will come on and tell you otherwise. grin

I do the same exact thing but were the line meets the two wire leaders i attatch a small daredevil two give som reflection I also place a small bobber on the line were it meets the tip up so I know the exact depth when I reset it. They use to make a wind tipup that would jig your lure worked very well but I havent seen them in a awhile. I do agree on the size of the chub. I often wonder if that big black line spooks some northerns?

Enjoy reading or seeing you guys make yer own leaders an quick stirkes.

Been doing it a long time an come up with some great ways to presnt minnow live or dead....many ways to go but hard to beat how it is pictured here....simple an totaly effective.

Fun junk .

Windlas tips are sometimes a great lil item. We still have a few of the old ones in black plastic but have used that idea to make better ones over the years that hold up well in any wind an pack / travel nice.....just anuther thing to save money on an show personel touch.....all good...and you tend to use what you make yerself even more. Tinkering with this stuff is one of the many ways to make you a way better fisher be it pike, musky, pannies, bass or SHARKS!!!!

smile

Pikes is killers, doubt they fraid of any line, leader or spinner...but these waters are deeper an darker than you or I know an you never really knows what goes on down below! Great posts DaddyO!!!

Keep on rocken!

HEy Huskie, the most stealthy, deadliest rig ever for tip-ups I use goes as follows.

I use regular tip-up line and I either tie 20lb mono or fluorocarbon directly to the tip-up line or if you do not know how to tie line-to-line just use a small swivel. I use about 3-5 feet of strong 20lb test tied to a smaller trebble hook. Now in MN you cant use a plain treble hook so i first put the smallest gold or silver spinner you can buy on the line. Now this is considered a "lure" which is perfectly legal.

Seeing your post made me log on and share this. I used to use plain hooks and quick-stirkes but with a plain hook I would lose over 50% of the flags i would get and with the quick-strike rigs, it is not as stealthy and the finicky fish dont want to bite it. I rarely lose fish now and my percentage has gone up considerably. I have even caught larger fish close to 40 inches and not had a problem with the 20 lb test line. THIS WORKS!!!!!

With my line, I am a little old fashion, I use the plain old black braided line, i.e. 20-25lb test. I too use the little bobber under the tip-up as a line marker for resets. I use 50 to 80 lb test mono leader material, 3 ft or so, attached to the line with a swivel.

I used to use LeRoy's (Bait in Cass Lake) Quick Strike Rigs, but had about a 50% hook rate. Since then I have gone to a single circle hook, about the size of a quarter dollar with great success, i.e. 90% or better hook rate. The key is to slowly pull in the running fish, do not try to "set" the hook. Always a jaw hinge hook up, fast, secure, and easy to remove, nothing in the throat for CPR.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
