friendlyfisher
Took my son out fishing the other day. I was walleye fishing and I wanted my 4yr old to fish but not with a jig. So i riged a small jig and a minnow on a bobber for him. before I knew it he was nailing the crappies. I can not find them if i try. The biggest he caught was 13 1/2 inches. I am wondering what that would weigh? so if you can help it would be appreciated. Thank you frindly and son.
Matt Johnson
I'd say around 1.5 pounds, depending on the body of water. Thats a dandy crappie! CrappieJohn
That is a nice crappie. My hat is off to you for taking your son and finding a way to adapt the fishing trip to fit his ability. Far too many people would simply hand him a walleye rig with more weight than a young child can be comfortable with and say "now you are fishing". Again , good job!------------------Plastics...making better fishermen without bait! Good Fishing Guys! Mat O
What would you all say a mountable sized crappie is? My biggest is 13". I'm thinking like maybe a 3 lb'er. would be considered trophy?? I nailed a 33" walleye in the Boundary Waters in July, but I was 15-20 miles in, in the middle of my 8 days out, so I let it go. That would have been nice for the wall. Matt Johnson
Mat O,A 3 pound crappie is a beast! That would go 17.5 plus inches. Not a whole lot of those caught everyday. I've seen a lot of 13, 14 and 15 inch fish on the wall and they all look pretty good. A trophy fish is different for each person. friendlyfisher's son's crappie is definitely a trophy for him, an awesome fish to catch at that age. A 33 inch walleye is, no doubt in my mind, a trophy fish. People that fish walleye day in and day out may never see a 33 inch walleye, very nice catch! united jigsticker
L = Length (in inches).L x L x L / 1,600 = weight of Crappie in pounds (average)12" x 12" x 12" / 1600 = 1.08 pounds11" x 11" x 11" / 1600 = .83 pounds = 13oz. (little over 3/4#)Use a lesser dividing factor for thicker fish, and a larger factor for less healthy fish. For instance, a fat Summer time Crappie, I might use 1,500 or 1,550 rather then 1,600.------------------Good fishing, UJ[email protected][This message has been edited by united jigsticker (edited 08-27-2004).]
