Engine block heater for Dodge

Recommended Posts

I want to install a engine block heater on my sons truck.

1999 Dodge Ram 1500, 5.9 magnum

What is the process?

I've checked into it, and it says right rear frost plug.

Is this going to be a tough job?

How do I pop the frost plug out?

First, you will have to drain the entire system of coolant or you will get wet! Once it is drained you will need a good access to the plug to remove it. The removal will vary depending how easy it is to get at. If that isnt a problem, I normally use a punch and give it a hit on the edge so it pops in on one side and out on the other. Then grab a hold of it with a small vice grip and pull it out. Once it is out, use some emery cloth to clean the outer edge of the hole. Once clean, install the heater element and make sure it is "clocked" in a position so the element is unobstructed. Turn the nut to tighten the heating unit, plug in the cord then route it to the front and secure it from rubbing or burning on anything. Refill the system, run the vehicle and check for leaks!
