Clam Bait Bucket

Whopper Stopper

Recommended Posts

Did anyone buy a Clam Bait Bucket? They look nice but even with a protective bag I don't see how (with a screw top) it wouldn't be froze shut by the time you made it to your first spot.

We are heading to Rainy in a couple of weeks and the temperatures could be easily in the minus teens. What would you guys use for a good dependable bucket?

Thanks for any tips!

My favorite bait bucket is the Frabill Min-O-Life with aerator. It keeps shiners lively and doesn't splash in the vehichle. Any bait container will have issues with the lid freezing in extreme temps. I see problems with the new Clam container.

I didn't like that it doesn't have a snap down lid like the Frabill's.

I checked them out at Gander the other day and wasn't impressed at all. Sitting in a warm store and trying to open the lid and the bucket just spun in the bag that I was holding on to. I had to actually take the bucket partway out of the bag just to get a grip on the bucket and open it up. The whole thing looked very cheaply made and the zipper looked like it would get iced up really quickly also. Very disappointed in Clam on this one. I passed...

I picked one of the Clam Bait Buckets up and was impressed on how things worked.

The first time I had to open the top I did have to take it out of the liner and open it, after that time I have not had to do it. The top comes off pretty easy. The one thing I did notice is if you put presure down on the lid it seems to come off harder. My guess is the rubber seal may make it harder to open when presure is apllied down.

I did a little test on the zipper to see if I could get it open with some water put on it.

I put some water on the zipper and set it outside this past weekend. It was mid 20's in Farmington so not the coldest weather but cold enough.

I let it sit for a couple of hours and then went outside to open the zipper, I got it started but did have a little trouble getting it all the way open. I brought it into the gargage temp in the garage was high 40's it took about 3 minutes and I was able to open the zipper the rest of the way. My guess is if you put in close to a heat source it would open much quicker.

I plan on giving it a real test this weekend and will report back.
