Grouse and the Gunflint!

Recommended Posts

My wife and I decided to skip Thanksgiving with the family and have rented a cabin off the Gunflint for the long holiday weekend. I am an avid waterfowler but have not chased many grouse. Seeing how we are going to be in the north woods for a couple of days I was thinking about bringing some orange and the pup for a walk in the woods. With any luck hopefully kick up some dinner.

Since I am new at this, what would be the best approach to grouse hunting around the Gunflint. I am starting from scratch here, any advice would be much appreciated.

There's a ton of logging trails up there and lots of birds that come out to get gravel in the morning and evening on those edges. For working with a dog, your best bet is going to be finding some of the aspen clear-cuts that have grown up, my best luck has been with trees that are at least as wide as a Louisville slugger, up to about 6 inches in diameter. Have fun!
