Getting the Auger ready.

Well got the old Jiffy Model 30 out again for it's 8th season. All I ever do is throw it in the corner of the garage with whatever fuel is left in it at the end of every season.

Pulled it 3 times and she's going good. smile I think the more I neglect it the better it runs. smile.

I was looking to touch up the auger bit with some black paint after cleaning it off. What would the best kind be to use. A rustoleum flat black, a rustoleum gloss black?

I'm in the same boat as you. The old girl sits in the corner and runs like a charm every year, everytime out. I need to touch up the auger bit as well and get a new blade.

The auger bit wabbles a little, nothing that stops it from drilling a nice hole, but if it an easy/cheap fix I'd like to give it a shot.

Was going to sell a bunch of old gear and upgrade to a new auger but I think I will keep running the Jiffy 30 til she dies.

My old Jiffy 30 I put the newer Ripper™ serrated blade that they put on the latest models. Any ways what a differnce it made in cutting time and breaking thru the bottom of the hole. The old type blade would hang up so I went with the best blade available and it was worth it! 2c

Mine has the normal ripper blades, did you put the stealth on it?

Depends on where it's wobbling. If the actual bit is bent, then a new bit is the answer. I've heard some guys trying to straighten bent bits, but without much success. Mine had a loose bushing on the bottom of the transfer case which would cause a wobble and gearcase grease to escape. Decided to open up the gearcase and replace the bushings and clutch while I was at it. I also noticed that there is a nylon spacer that was worn to nothing. Replaced that as well. Wasn't a difficult repair, but needed some tools that hadn't seen use for quite some time.

I've thought about it as well. I decided against it also, mainly since all of the new power heads seem to have plastic instead of metal, and I've heard that guys have cracked and broke them.

Also, I've had friends that have gotten new augers and just have never been able to get them to run very well. So I figure why take the chance. I've got an auger that runs like a mofo, takes a beating, and I don't have to do a dang thing to it. Also, ther isn't any plastic on it except for the gas tank and hoses.

Got an olllld jiffy. My dad got it in the 70's, he gave it too me a few years ago since he never uses it. It looks a lot like the one above, but only has a single bar coming out to hold on to, and the throttle is on the top carrying handle. I think its a 1967? But I tell you what, that thing runs like a champ every year. Usually have to play with the air screw a bit first time starting it in the fall. Had a buddy come out ice fishing with me last year and he asked, how in the heck old is that thing? I laughed and said I bet its quicker than yours! He has an older strike master and I was done before he was a little over mid way through. I love the thing. Wonder where I could get the old girl sharpend though? It has the old style blade, non removable ripper. I think I may need to get it out of the corner of the garage and started up. Bring on the ice!

I've heard that the older single handle ones like that have kits avalible to put butterfly handle bars on them. Never heard of the blade being non removable though. That would suck.

Ya the blade is basically built into the auger shaft, it cuts good, but with these older ones a little downward force is a must. Never heard of the kits? Thats an idea!

If you can find a metal shop, and can show them how the new style auger has the removable ripper blades they should be able to modify it also so you can use the removeable ripper blades jiffy makes.

    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
