Doesn't take a lot. Just about 100 feet of 6 lbs mono leader, #6 treble hook, and a large fat head minnow. I know some guys use shiners, but I prefer the fathead.

Make sure you get to your tip up ASAP because they RUN!

OH- if you're fishing the harbors, watch out for 10' holes.

"Why wait for ice? They are biting very well right now right from shore in the harbors. "

It's an ice fishing thing. Yea, granted catching them from shore is okay, but catching them on the ice is a RIOT! First and last ice in the harbors is glass clear, so aside from the sensation of battling those massive browns hand over hand with the line zipping through your finger tips; there's nothing more amazing than having these beautiful fish flash under your feet and around your hole.

Took Miss Texas about a half hour to get this beast in. 4 times the fish came to the hole and missed the hole, only to go diving back to the bottom.

That and I'm pretty much sick of fishing open water. I'm ready for the ice.

Half hour? Why such light line? I worry about lactic acid build up. She is holding the fish on shore so assume she kept it, makes not difference in this instance. The above photo is of Miss Texas? One of those PK lures you gave me spins when you let it drop. Bet you will catch big harbor browns on them.

Miss Texas is sitting on the ice on top of about 14 FOW. But yea, she kept it. The fish is sitting fondly on her office wall as we speak.

Caught it on a large fat head minnow on a #6 treble, with about 100 feet of 6lbs mono leader and 20 lbs tip up line. Hand over hand pulling is a lot different than reeling in that your fingertips are the drag and you allow line to absorb the impact of the fish fight, not at all like a regular fishing rod.

I will confess that the spoon I gave you is my "must have" for ice fishing. Lake Trout go crazy over them, but I haven't had any complaints for other species though.
