Where to Go?

Recommended Posts

My wonderful Wife is sending me to Canada for a fishing trip with friends next summer. We have set the week for the first week of June. Now I need some ideas on where to go. We will be driving in, no fly in trip this time. What are some recomendations. We are driving from southern Minnesota. Thanks in advance.

I'm looking into going to Cliff lake next year. It supposed to have a little of everything, walleyes, smallies, lake trout, pike and muskies are in good numbers. Paved road going all the way there is what I'm is what I'm told.

Check out Lake St. Joseph. You can drive to the landing. You have to go through a resort to fish on the lake, but they are very reasonable. Last year we caught a ton of walleyes and a lot of big northerns. The biggest northern last year was 44" long. We got several over 40 and a whole bunch between 35 and 40. I can't wait to get back up there this coming May.

You have a lot of choice. My Recomendation would be Lake of the Woods @ Morson. Redwing Resort is a good choice here. Lac Suel is also a prime choice, Evergreen , Golden Fawn, or Goose Bay Resorts are nice places to stay. The fishing is excellent, but ther is some big water to cross which can get wipped up by the wind. If you have some flexibility I'd move the trip to the 2nd full week of June. Depending on the year you run the risk of running into some cold water and a fish population with lockjaw. Giving it one more week you will find a better chance of a hungery walleye population. You never know what the conditions will be year to year, but I never go north of the border looking for walleyes until week 2 of June.

Don't dicount the Manitou. Early June fishing can reap some fast and furious lake trout fishing. Two years ago on Memorial Weekend we were fishing Essox Lake which leads to the Manitou and were catching 5 to 7 pound lake trout throwing crankbaits and spoons up against the islands. Northern fishing is also really good and you can use topwater baits which adds to the excitement when they trash it on the surface.

Early june is good everywhere. Morson area for walleyes, northern. Lac Seul, golden road resort or Goose bay are good bets. Pakwash area at the provincial park can be fun(did it last year), Ear Falls area has lots of places to stay on a variety of lakes, Chukuni, Gull Lake and the Red Lake area are fun. Could go far north and hit Nungesser, Cali, or Stormer on the Nungesser Road out of Red Lake if you wanted to go about far as you can driving. Shortest drives to the Morson, Kenora area. Longer drives to the Lac Seul, Ear Falls area, Longest drives to the Nungesser, Cali, Red Lake area. How far do you want to drive into Canada?

We've stayed at Nungesser Lake Lodge several times and always found great fishing for pike and walleyes. Kind of a cool entrance too. You drive to their landing and they take you by boat a few miles, then you get on a trailer pulled by a 4 wheeler and they take you through the woods to the camp. Nice cabins and good boats, do your own cooking, and affordable.

From the Gull Rock Lake area you are within easy driving distances to many lakes. Gull Rock is big and if you want to try others Red Lake is only minutes away. A day trip could be made to Cali or Nungesser north of Red Lake. Stormer Lake up the road a little has good walleyes as does Kirkness if you would like to get off the beaten path. I know someone who fishes at Gull and they have a great time. You will do well no matter what options you try.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
