sighting in rifles?

A lot of people fly into Duluth or Hibbing or one of the other smaller airports. Most people get in only a day or 2 before the opener. If you get into say Hibbing at 9 pm on Thursday night and get picked up and a ride to your hunting area up near the echo trail it seems to me pretty ridiculous that you should have to spend the next day driving 6 hours to a range to check your scope.

Seems like most people who don't get where I'm comming from on this subject are from the metro area. I grew up in the woods and didn't go to a true range until after I came home from the service. I think it's more the norm in the metro to go to a range and shoot. Most people who live in the woods don't.

That's a list of ranges in St. Louis County. There are five listed in Duluth, and many more in other areas. I think one would probably work for our hypothetical hunter.

I don't see any reason to make this another thread about people living up north or in the woods versus "city slickers". I just don't think anyone's being asked for something too terribly inconvenient. If someone lives in the woods within driving distance from their hunting area, they have lots of opportunity year-round to check their equipment. And I guess if someone's willing to haul their rifle by air to hunt someplace, they're probably not overly concerned about cost or convenience. I don't have any problem with asking them to schedule their travel plans to allow for a brief check up on their rifle and optics at a range. Minnesota is still a bargain for non-resident hunters compared to many other states.

The fact of the matter is that you can't craft every law to make it convenient for every person, there's just no way that will ever work.

If you live in the metro there are plenty of ranges around so there is no excuse.

If you live in the country you have all year to find 10 minutes to take a few shots to check your rifle so there is no excuse. Waiting until the last second is no ones fault but your own.

If you fly into the state for a hunt just make sure to plan ahead and leave time to check your rifle. There are ranges throughout MN so likely there is one that will work. Just need to plan ahead. Besides how many people are we really talking about that fly into MN just for rifle season? I'm guessing if people are spending the money to fly to a great deer hunt they have better options other than MN.

Really this just isn't that big of a deal. A little thinking ahead is all it takes to avoid an issue. If this hypothetical hunter can't do that then I don't see why we need to change a law to help him out.

    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
