Scope on 30/30 question

Recommended Posts

My son has a 30/30 that I tried to sight in for him a couple of weeks ago. I have the back ramp up as high as it will go and it is still shooting low and to the left. I figure I can continue to find a way to raise the back but I don't know how to adjust for left/right. Anyway, I am thinking of putting on a scope but there is no scope rail on the gun. How big a deal would this be for Cabelas or Gander to do this? Anything not to do? Thanks. I've never understood how you adjust left/right with iron sights that only go up/down.

What's the model of the gun? I own an old Winchester Model 94 that ejects the cartridge from the top. Several years ago, when I was thinking of going deer hunting, I took it to a gunsmith and told if I wanted a scope, he told me they could do it but it would be some work. The mount would have to go on the side of the gun and he didn't recommend it

Do you have the Model 94?

Check to see if the front sight is fixed, or if it can be moved left to right. Keep in mind that you'll move it opposite of the rear sight when adjusting point of aim/ impact. You move the back sight up to move the POI up, but you move the front sight LEFT to move the POI RIGHT.

I'm sure it is drilled and tapped my 30-30 marlin was. You can most likely just put picadilly (spelling?) rail on it or base and rings. It shouldn't be and issue is it lever action? I just had scope mounted on my Browning lever action.

My dad still shoots a model 94 30-30 with the scope mounted off to the side. I've only used it a couple times, and at first I didn't like it, but it's growing on me. Still able to use open sights and once you get used to it it's almost more comfortable!!! I'm kind of surprised your gunsmith didn't recommend it.

Most gunsmiths I talk with don't like or recommend see through etc mounts the rings etc are not very good I was told not to do it on my Browning blr and rings I looked at were [PoorWordUsage] and could only find couple out there to do it.

If you just MUST have a scope on that nice, quick little rifle, try the side mounted option-it has been around for a long time.

Looks sorta Rube Goldberg but it DOES work.

Perhaps what you really need is somebody to help you sight the gun in properly and SKIP the scope plan.

That's what I'd go for.
