'93 Chevy Pickup tranny shifting hard?

Recommended Posts

Just started doing this right out of the blue. Shifts from park into drive very solid (way harder then before) and first to second is very hard as well. Second to third and into overdrive are smooth like always. Transmission is working fine otherwise, no slipping or over revving of the motor at shift points. Just slams into gear really hard. Not as bad out of park into reverse.

Did add some JB Transmission Cleaner and Conditioner and have ran it for about 300 miles with no better results. Fluid didn't smell burnt. Might be due for a fluid and filter change, but I wouldn't think a plugged filter would cause this would it?

Not to familiar with these tranny's just looking for some insight. Won't be able to fix myself will be taking it in. Don't want to get swindled by a shop I don't know.

Thanks for any info.

If you can find a tranny guy to put in a shift kit that should fix it, mine did the same thing. It was about $500.00 and has worked great for the last 125,000 miles.

Some will just want to sell you a new tranny, it could always be something real bad but I would look into that first. The valve is stainless in an aluminum body so it wears out, they drill it and sleeve it and your good to go.

Good Luck

Take it to a reputable tranny shop. Same type of thing happened to me and everyone said to do this or that. It turned out to be a $300 valve that affected the shifting of the tranny. No "pour this in or add this" was going to fix it. Get it done right and move on!!!!

Good luck.

Thank you guys. Thought I'd give it a try maybe loosen up a stuck valve if that's what it was. Didn't know if it might be a torque converter problem or not. But two of the same answers points me in the right direction. At least I'll have something to go off of if they try jerkin me around. Thanks again.

By the way, does anyone know of a reputable transmission shop around Granite Falls or Marshall area?
