Worth it or not?

Recommended Posts

My bear hunt was cut one day short due to getting a text demanding me to work Labor Day. I know I should have never looked at the text cause I had no service. We had bears at baits but since they were coming in at night we didnt have enough time to outsmart them.

Is it worth going back in the last week of Sept. for a 3 or 4 day hunt? The pics of a really good boar just keeps calling be back. How big? Looked big enough.

It's hunting its always worth it.. Or better than anything else to do!

As far as success that late I've never been hit much after first week of Sept. I'm probably bad person to ask I had bait at two this spring from last fall, both got hit hard again this year with fresh bait. Good luck!

Double H? heres wat I do if ur interested in trying, no doubt that is an awsome bear on the pic, but I,m sure he will have moved on without keeping him fed, but end of sept. all naturals are gone he might think Hey I remember this one place called H an H buffette. I,d take a turky fryer an a good metel pot, an ad some mollasas, honey bacon grease if ya have or any other scenty stuff, you know do a really big burn for awhile mid morning, then take this stuff an tosse it into trees or soak some bread an hang in the wind. Kinda of a hale mary approach if you only have a few days to hunt. If there is bear in the area this could bring them quicker than normal due to the heavy scent, let heat to smoking but dont let it burn crisp. Worth a try. for just a three day hunt. boar

I'd take Boars outtake on this. Also, like others, hunting sure beats anything else...well, most things!

Though, like alot of us, we hunt far away from where we live. Money, gas, food, lodging...sure adds up and if you've been only catching this bear from cameras during the nights, you might have a tough hunt that will probably not work out.

If you do try, do like Boar suggested, try to "make" him want to come in. Sometimes on night bears, try simply taking the food back out with you. Alot of the times they know when you place the food out, and they just come in late cause the foods still there. If he smells the food or hears you bring it but he fails to get any when he comes in late, he might just try a little earlier the next day. And since you have 3-4 days, he might get the hint that the foods leaving by then and make a nice early visit.

You'll have to try something though...night bears can be tough cause they know they still have food at night cause no one else is eating it! Day bears may have competition bringing them in early or are younger typically.

Good luck and I hope you get out there!

I am a rookie hunter this year, but have been baiting for years for the guys when I get time off to help. I always thought earlier was better from everything I read, but when i dropped my bear off at the taxidermist this year with my group he was surprised. He looked at the books for our guys for the past 5 years and the 15th to 20th (give or take a day or 2) has always been when our group has done best. The bear I dropped off was the first opening weekend one of our group ever. And they always sit opening weekend for 4 days minimum. Every area is different I understand that. But..less natural food in the woods increases your chances I would think. If I could....I would be sitting without question.

I think I'm gonna go unless work interferes again. I do think its the same bear I had on that sight last year. That spot sees alot of competition and its public. So I know the grouse hunters will be out in full force too. Plus 365 miles one way is hard to swallow when im still waiting for my rug from last year yet.
