bhs91
Out fishing today and I blew the bottom cylinder in my Yammy. Took it to my mechanic today, compression test showed bottom cylinder was out. Not a motor guy so forgive me in advance if I use the wrong terminology. What are my options? remanufactured powerhead, have it rebuilt? No clue? My mechanic, who i think is a good guy said anywhere from $1500-$1800. if I look online, where are some good places to shop for a remanufactured power head? Thanks,BHS
boatfixer
It will depend on the extent of the damage. Whether it is a scored cylinder, hole in the piston, etc
bhs91
OK, so the mechanic that I typically use recommended a remanufactured powerhead. being a non-motor guy i am guessing that it is not as simple as switching them out. It has to be broken down to see what caused the problem, fixed and then a new powerhead is put in?Any info is greatly appreciated.
icefishin4fun
bhs91 I think 1500.00 to 1800.00 sounds a little high if only one cylinder is bad it could be bored out and replace one piston and rering the other two then clean all carbs and replace water pump for 1200.
marine_man
Has the mechanic figured out what caused the problem in the first place? Replacing parts getting it back running might not completely fix the problem.marine_man
bhs91
Here is what I found out...locator pin failed which allowed the ring or seal to turn? which let something in the piston which then blew the bottom cyclinder. Ordered a new powerhead from yamaha, $1600, and it is being installed next week. Hopefully fishing next weekend.BHS
