winter gear in summer...

I have taken to panfishing the past few summers initially due to the kids loving it. I have found I really enjoy it now also. This year has been great using small jigging spoons- the pimply & swedish kind.

I was getting some really skeptical looks from people at the resort last weekend until I started drilling some slab crappies off the floating dock in 15' of water. Coupled with a UL rod that is about as fun as it gets. I have also utilzed several Ice reels for the UL rods I haven't used my ice rods yet but I am thinking that could be cool too. Anybody use spring bobbers in open water? What else do you bring from hard water?

I'll use my flasher in open water, but a spring bobber sill be effected more by the movement of the boat than that of the fish.

Try fishing the same spots just before ice up that you fish on first ice. You'll have fun wink

I use alot of jiggin style spoons with leechs under bobbers for walleyes.

I also use alot of panfish iceflies for panfish and even catchig creek chubs for catfish bait.

I have use a ice rod over the side of the boat to catch sunnies and crappies in deep water when they are suspended and also for perch its a blast to do but I always seem to go back to my untra light gear for them as that is a lot of fun also.

Glad to here your haveing so much fun fishing panfish

I've given it a shot, and always have my ice jigs on hand with the intention of finding suspended fish. So far just about every lake I've hit up doesn't have deep structure that calls for positioning yourself over fish and using jigs, so instead I switch to the fly rod.

I'm hoping perhaps I'll be able to make use of ice fishing tackle sometime this fall while open water is still around.
