Da Biggin
I am an inner-city hunter with limited resources to continue training my 19 month GSP. Currently we have been working on patterned hunting ( hunting within range) and retrieving mostly. I have been reinforcing his "whoa" command and working stylized pointing in there. The issue I'm running in to is boredom. I can tell that after about 5 minutes he gets bored repeating the same things he's been doing since he was 9 weeks old and as soon I see that I tend to get bored myself. I totally understand that live birds are the pinnacle of training tools for any bird dog; however, when live birds (game farms) aren't available what are some things that can be done to maintain interest and continue polishing an already great dog?Any assistance is greatly appreciated and I'm looking forward to the advice. Thanks in advance
gspman
When he gets bored I'd stop. One thing you could do is take him to the river for some water retrieving. Also what does "in range" mean? If it means inside gun range (40 yds) you are limiting what your dog can do for you. I do think the thing you need now is some bird work to get him fired up. What is he pointing when you are styling him up?
Da Biggin
In range for me means within earshot of his beeper collar. I would like him to hunt as thoroughly as he does fast. As it stands now he tends to lose the "zig-zag" pattern and almost works straight away from me the more he works without the stimulant of a bird. When it comes to style I've tried my best to be clever. I try to find an area we've not worked before that has some cover and a breeze. Without his seeing me I tie a sponge saturted with Dokken pheasant scent to a low-mid level branch on a sapling. I then work him into the wind.
