I tell people as a last resort with a faulty computer all the time to pull all the power to a device and let it sit. I was on vacation last week and came back to one of our VMWare servers disconnected/down, spent hours on the phone yesterday with VM support cuz we couldn't get the primary NIC to come online, reboot, restart network services etc, etc, etc. Came in this AM and tried a few things no workee. So shut the box down pulled both power cords, went down the hall the john, came back plugged it all back in and wouldn't ya know it came back to life. Had some putsy stuff in the VWWare to resolve, but it worked! Was about to scrounge a PCI NIC to throw in there to see if we could get it to recognize that one.

Great feeling isn't it?

A few years back, my old desktop stopped working as in wouldn't even turn on. I put it in the bed of the truck and drove to a local computer shop. The guy said that the main fan was dead and so was the motherboard. Dejected I went home and plugged in the old gal for one last shot. Fired right up and ran for another three years.

Never underestimate the power of, uh, removing the power! Bumpy car rides work too, and in the end, so do baseball bats.

The power down completely and reboot is a wonderful thing. laugh Man hindsight can be 20/20 with a Duh added in! Just be thankful it was not weeks. wink

Too many instances for me of suggesting things and forgetting them or applying to the obvious with my own situations.

Proud member of the VMware community and partner since 2011. grin Took intrest in vSphere and vCloud which lead into vCenter Server 4.1. It really started with VMware Tools and Player with Ubuntu.

A trick that has worked once for me is to hold the power button for at least 10 seconds after the computer shuts off.

Came back home yesterday from training to find my cable modem is shot and the wife's computer had a blown power supply. Storms must have been a little too close!!!

Jim holding the power button down for either 10 or 30 seconds (with battery and/or power cord pulled) is another way to clear the CMOS. wink Sometimes pulling the battery is best as you know CMOS is cleared.
