Have been looking at all of the new choices out there. Trying to upgrade from a Lowrance x-51 to something with more pixels and a 5 inch screen. At first I thought the Mark 5 monochrome unit looked good. 480x480 pixels with improved back lighting for around 150 bucks. But the more research I did on monochrome vs color leaned toward the color units for daytime viewing especially with polarized sunglasses on. So then I looked at the Elite 5x color unit with transducer for about 450 bucks. Looking better...but then there is the hds-5x with high definition but still 480x480 pixels with transducer for 550 bucks.

How much difference is there between the two? Heck for the 550 bucks I could get the Elite 5 with gps/graph combo! Although for the extra hundred bucks the HDS-5X is upgradeable down the line for structure scan and gps which starts putting this upgrade thing out of control for a 14 foot boat. Any suggestions?

Decide what you need and pick the best from there. It is never ending game of "for only $100 more"

I to was in the market for a new depthfinder,I was upgrading from a Lowrance X125.I wanted to get a color sonar/GPS combo unit,I was tempted to settle for a B/W combo unit, but felt I would be dissapointed a year from now with my choice.I fished with a buddy that has a Lowrance HDS 5,that is a sweet unit,I ended up buying a Humminbird 788c.Both of those units accept map chips, I know money doesn't grow on trees,if you can save your money even if you have to wait another season get the unit you want.Do your research on different units,I strongly suggest you go with a color sonar/GPS combo unit.Lowrance and Humminbird both make great units.It is a night and day difference between color and black and white.Good luck and let us know what you went with.

Well I just bit the bullet after countless hours of online research and ordered the Lowrance Elite 5 combo. Will be picking it up on the 23rd. That's going to be a long wait. I fell like the kid waiting for my secret decoder ring. Yeah I didn't want to second guess myself later either!
