redLUNDrebel
I bought this motor in 2008 and never did idled correctly. This year it just would not idle, it dies after a few minutes and also dies when i put the gear forward and reverse. It starts and runs well when throttling up, but i have to slowly engage forward or reverse slowly that it wont die on me. I have replace the plugs and the fuel filter. I am thinking of idle mixture adjustment is needed, but i just dont have the money to take it to the dealer right. Thanks in advance with any help from all the expert in this forum... FM_Mike
Sounds like its time for a carburetor cleaning and a carb kit. You may also want to run some sea foam through the motor and see if that helps clean the carbs. Mike
pulleye16
wow...new plugs and fuel filter already in a 2008? Also, I'd hope it doesn't need a carb kit that soon as well.Sounds like you just need to adjust something. Merc's are rough runners espicially at idle speeds though they shouldn't die on you...Read the manual again and see what you can adjust before "sticking" more money in an '08! boatfixer
I do agree with adjustments first but with todays fuel, I wouldnt be one bit surprised at a rebuild. It only takes one winter or a longtime between outings for degredation to begin and cause carburation problems.
redLUNDrebel
Thanks guys for the helpful inputs. I downloaded the carb adjustment manual for this motor and i think its called the Idle mixture screw adjustments. I was reading the procedure, it seem simple, but i am pretty sure its not. I will give it a try. One of the steps calls for check for "too lean mixture on accelaration." How do you check for that? Is this the adjustment needed? Any hints and tips will be helpful.here is the link for the carb. adjustments: merc. 2 stroke carb. idle mixture adjustment.
