fivebucks
I wouldn't trim oaks until the fall at the earliest. I think it is still time to worry about the oak wilt bugs. One of the experts I'm sure will chime in but I've always heard to only trim oaks in late fall or winter.

The oak wilt fungus and beetles which spread the disease become active again in late summer/early fall however the theory is it cannot spread to healthy trees during the fall season as the trees are not actively growing and no longer putting on spring wood. IMO though, why risk it - just wait until the dormant season to prune (i.e. winter).
Powerstroke
The advice you've gotten is correct. You should not prune oaks at all during the growing season. Typically white oaks are less susceptible to oak wilt, but we had a tough winter, late and long spring and now summer is setting in. I see no reason to add any more risk to your tree. Steve Foss
This time of year I'd select which branches you want to trim and hit them with a stripe of latex spray paint or flag them. The leave them alone over winter and trim on one of those nice warm early April days before the sap starts flowing. Best to give the oaks a full growing season to heal over the scars. Best to mark them now because things look very different when the branches are bare than they do now. These are the basic rules of thumb I use when trimming deciduous trees of all species. If you get a storm and some branches come down or break and are dangling, then it's time to move quickly. In that case, better to have neat cuts than long tears and gouges.
