Osakis Sucker

Recommended Posts

I was up fishing on Osakis last week, and while fishing a leech on a 16' deep bar edge I CPR'd this:

I knew there were suckers in Osakis, as they spawn in the same creeks used by walleye, but I'd never caught one in there before. Kind of an odd place in the lake to catch one. I wonder if he's wild, or a dumped bait that avoided all the toothy critters in there...

bet he put up a good fight!

just about any MN lake that has any connections to major tributaries is going to have a population of wild native suckers, so the chances are great that that is a wild one

funny how sucker populations never seem to take over a lake or stream like bullheads or carp might when the conditions are right

there are huge populations of suckers in most lakes, anglers just rarely encounter them. Sauk River is FULL of suckers, for example, and Osakis is the headwaters of the Sauk

Yes, he did put up a good fight. I thought I had a nice walleye, when I first got a glimpse of him I thought it was a dogfish, then I saw I had a sucker.

I did know there were sucker in Osakis and its small tributaries, but this is the first one I have caught in there. Growing up in SE Minnesota, I caught a lot of white sucker and redhorse in the trout and smallmouth streams we have in that corner of the state when I used to fish nightcrawlers in those small, clear waters. For that matter, I just caught a nice redhorse here in Iowa City this week.
