Lake Nipigon Fishing Reports by Hardcore Fishing & Adventures

Recommended Posts

Its a high water year--even higher than last year. That makes for tough fishing but good for production. Water temps on the main lake are still on the cold side--last week on the Virgin Bank and Blackwater Bank only 47 degrees. Hittin a few lakers on planer boards flat lineing and a few on riggers set no more than 15ft. Hit a few small ones on Sailors reef in South Bay--up tight on the reef in 7 to 16ft of water.

Walleye are still alittle slow but size has been increasing in Wabinosh and Ombabika.

Speck fishing has been fantastic--still hard to find a legal fish, 22 inch minimum sucks.

Thanks for the info Kkahmann . We will likely spend some time in the Shakespear area and likely a trip up to Humboldt. Depending on the water flow have not ruled out a trip up to Jackfish . In your opinion do I bring the boards or riggers or both . I felt the water was really low last year but I'm definately not a local . We tried to get into a lake off of Nipigon last year and it was impossible due to low water . In fact have never seen it that low at the entry /mouth in the past many years .Thanks again.

There is only one outflow on Lake Nipigon--the Nipigon River. With its 3 hydro dams the lake level is easily controlled--some years lots of fluctuations other years not so much. Spring of 2010 was very low but with all the rain last Summer they brought the level back up to normal levels, then we had average snowfall and a wet Spring so the lake maintained a high water level all Spring. This year the water levels aren't rising as much as most years. Educated Biologists tell me this is very good for fish spawning production. I have noticed that fishing improves in water rising conditions but thats just my opionion and nobody has accused me of being over-educated.

I'll be useing dipseys and downriggers for lakers on the deep water banks starting now. Got a report today from South Bay, a guy I know boated 12 on Sailors reef in an hour right up on the reef in 12ft of water--biggest was only 18lbs so the small ones are still shallow.

Walleyes are hitting good in both the Lil Jack and Ombabika.

Jason--I'm still logging on the west side and fishing on the east. Good berry crop last year so no problem with bears yet. Dogs are gettin fat and lazy--Eddie still a grouch.

Well I have some numbers as I have 10 groups done this year and have put 231 Brook Trout in the boat with 34 over 22 inches with 2 25 inchers being the biggest. Lake Nipigon is rising as it is now at its highest water level of the year. The temperature has been behind but it is warming up now.

Well my season is over and we put 273 Brook Trout in the boat this year with 42 over 22 inches and 4 25 inchers. It was a wild season with some nasty storms that included 7ft waves and in September Water Spouts chasing us on the lake!! The water level in Lake Nipigon is high and so were the water temps late in the summer. I still have spots open for 2012 if anyone wants a chance at a Trophy Brook Trout. Be safe out there and if its not a clean shot then don't take it!!!!
