Wireless does not recognize any security enabled networks

Recommended Posts

My new/used laptop recognizes one non-security enabled network of my neighbor and I can get intenet from it.

But it will not detect and show any security enabled networks (in my home or of several nearby neighbors).

Any ideas? After several hrs trying, I give up. The only thought I have is could it be possible that there is some type of local or group policy preventing the internal wireless network adapter to recognize security enabled networks?

XPsp2 on an HPnc6320 notebook

It was run by/installed by corporate IT.

It worked fine with their software package I-Pass BUT I removed that software (because I thought it was installed just for corporate users) and also thought that a reputable HP machine would be ok with Windows Zero....whatever.

Thanks for any ideas you might have.

When I set up the security on my Dual-band cisco router, it automatically hid the network. Basically, I can hit the button on top of the router to make it visible to any WiFi device for 2 minutes. I just use the network id and password, and enter the information on the device I'm connecting to my network.

When your program searches for the network and fails, you should find the option to enter it manually. Or read the instructions with your router to connect a new device.

No networks show up as available in View Available Wireless Networks.

Other laptops I have used in my home find my basement router/network just fine. (I already tried that manual install but wonder why all the other laptops I have used to connect to my wireless internet work and this one does not).

I am now on another machine trying online support chat with HP...we'll see how that goes.

Waiting...........

It should be in the security settings of the wireless setup, it should be on the same step as the channel selection.

Keep in mind that you will have less security and have to redo the setup of all other devices connected to the router.

If you change to WEP if it works then you can check to see if there is a WPA upgrade for your machine. Installing that would seem to be easier than changing the rest of your wireless devices to WEP.

Good luck.

Can't find WEP or WPA on any tabs of Properties in Device Manager.

And my connection link to HP support got dropped off by my neighbor's internet after about 30+mins so F that...I quit trying to be cheap with this used pc after this 8 hr UNPAID day.

Modern technology...isn't it great? I'm glad I'm not gonna live forever.

I know, I know...so are a bunch of other people.

Try adding a wireless network on the laptop.

1.From the Start menu, select Settings -> Control Panel -> Network Connections.

2. Right click on the Wireless Network Connection and choose Properties.

3. Next click the Wireless Networks Tab.

4. Make sure the "Use Windows to Configure my Wireless Network Settings" checkbox is checked.

5. Under the "Preferred Networks" area click the ADD button.

6. To set up your wireless profile, enter the network name into the Network Name(SSID) field. The SSID should be provided by the wireless service provide

That should allow you to select wpa or wpa2 and allow you to enter the SSID. Another thing to try is to update the drivers for the wireless card.

It could be the Wireless card is old enough that it won't see WPA, if that is the case you should be able to setup another Wireless network with security settings that device is capable of.

Thanks for sticking with me Upnorth.

But step 3 does not have a Wireless Networks tab show up after I click on Properties...only a General and Advanced tab are there...weird, huh?

That tab has not been there all day.

I even have downloaded updates from HP for XP2 for Wireless Assistant and for the Intel Pro adapter card.

For your Final Test question, please don't spend too much time on me.

But I'm sure you like the I-T challenge now, huh?

Didn't think you'd stick with this impossible task.

Sooooo, I disabled the card in Device Manager, re-booted, and...waaahlaaah!

I am now connected. The tab is there and all my neighbor's secured connections show up.

When in doubt, delete and re-install I guess. But who would have thought that since this machine used to work ok with the corporate software on it.

Oh well, I guess the unpaid 8 hr day gets my daughter an upgrade to her really old laptop afterall.

I don't know if it was the disabling or the HP downloads or a combo of them, but it sure was a long day to get there.

Miller Time methinks!!!!!

Sorry if I missed this but I was going to suggest shutting off/down any firewalls on the pc tell I read there was no wireless network to choose from. Good to hear you got it going.
