Devils Lake ice fishing

Recommended Posts

What riverview said. Usually there are plenty of roads around, but I know last winter was a humdinger, and they quit after the snow got too deep. When it comes to DL, I'd bring a snowmobile for sure. Lots of water you can cover with one of those, vs sticking to the roads that the resorts plow.

people are starting to move around. I fished 6 mile north of 19 the last 2 weekends 12 inches down to 4 in places. I am sure there is still open water somwhere. fish have been biteing pretty good nice eyes with a few big perch thrown in. I have allready caught more perch this year than the last 2 combined. no snow yet. forcast is for above normal tem,ps all week

just got back from 6 days of fishing on devils lake the bite on the north end of 6 mile has slowed. I fished the shallows and rock piles around hagens 12 inches of good ice where i was The ice gets scetchy around pressure ridges and shallow water with reeds. a few inches of snow with rain that has most of it froze down. I was fishing out a mini truck and everybody else was i saw was on wheelers. a little more cold weather and the ice should be better. the fishing was pretty good caught alot of eyes between 14 and 22 inches a few perch and northern. fished 15 to 36 feet of water most eyes caught 15 to 17 feet of water.

The 12 inches of ice i mentioned in my last post went to 14 last weekend. Had to move some to catch fish. I fished from 6 mile to creel bay and didnt see any less than 12 inches of ice. You have to be careful by pressure ridges but people are starting to move around some There are some really nice perch being caught some shallow and some deep.

I have never fished west of grahams island so i dont know anything about the flats. There is a bait shop gas station in minawakin that should know about the flats. last weekend there were vehicals all over the lake. the thickest ice i saw was 18 inches. .

Thanks a lot for the info, we're going to be stopping by Devil's lake on our way back from Minot for a day of fishing so it really doesn't matter where we go I guess, if you have any general info of a good area for us to go I would appreciate it. Thanks again.

Are thin ice areas usually marked on the lake?

Not that I've ever seen. Best bet would be to avoid bridges (typically have higher current) and along roads where culverts may be. As an unwritten rule, sticking to the plowed roads is your safest option. If you need to venture further, park the truck right off the road (so you're not blocking it) and hoof it.

I fished this weekend the ice is over 2 feet thick everywhere i went except by the pressure ridges and there are alot of them. Fishing was pretty good not alot of decent sized walleyes and got into a few schools of perch with a few 13 iinchers. I tried crossing the pressure ridge on the south end of 6 mile and couldnt find a pl;ace for a wheel vehical. snow cat would be ok. alot of 3 in ice over 10 in of water with ice under that. tried to cross the one to get to the north end and it was the same. muct be from the cold weather and no snow. I have never so many .

Fishing remains good good walleye bite early and late. Schools of perch are around and once you find them some can be huge. I have gotten into schools of 11 and 12 inch where as fast as you could get your hood down they would bite. some days you can mark them but not catch many. the northern seem to allways be active and keep getting bigger. I have been having the best luck in 14 to 20 feet for eyes and 18 to 45 feet for perch. Have caught some big eye and northern in deep water perch fishing. stop signs, lindy rattle flyer, frostys and buckshots

acess on creel with woodlands plowing roads to 6 mile point where the pressure ridges are.i think the casino has pressure ridge trouble. atv have been useing 6 mile boat ramp for acess to hagens area. people comeing off grahams island to acess 6 mile rock pile. I dont know about east bay or west of grahams island.

My brothers and I were contiplating on taking a trip to DL for some whitebass. Eyes and jumbo perches will be in the plan as well. But we would like to target primarly for white bass.

What has the bite been like for folks who do go for whitebass during the ice fishing season? I know fishing for them during the open water season is fairly easy. I'm not looking for any honey holes but just more inputs in general.

I dont know anybody that targets white bass in the winter.I have marked schools of white bass this year that will follow a lure up to within 4 feet of the ice but cant get them to bite. The white bass i have caught have been in 40 to 60 feet in mouth of creel bay in the spring when you boiling water on the edge of reeds top water lures are a blast on white bass.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
