Walleye relating to humps/bars/reefs?

Recommended Posts

Where are you going? I will be fishing Leech around that time and on Leech where the wind has been and is blowing is key. That time of year I would probably be working shallower than deeper unless there is dead calm. Dead calm would send me deep or working weeds. You gotta adjust to the conditions and let the fish tell you whats up.... I have other fishing cliches' but I'll save them for other posts. Good luck and don't let Erik outfish you too badly.

Mistercarpsnaggermom,

Nice handle, sir. 'd like to see that 7-character haiiku'd into a vanity plate grin.gif

Kabetogama. Our guide last year kept drifting the sandbars longitudinally, but I don't know which side & why, and didn't think to ask him. Thanks for the info!

Give a man a fish and he'll keep 'em all in one basket.

Hi,
We're tackling big water this Memorial weekend, and I was looking for a little advice/experience to help us eliminate some of that water.

How do post-spawn walleye relate to humps/bars/reefs? Typical depth, windward or leeward, sunny or shady, temps to watch out for - that kind of stuff.

Any info appreciated - thanx!

Aquaman, fished kab two years ago over memorial weekend.. we stayed at ash river lodge...found decent fishing in sullivan bay, fishing the edges of the channel, also did well in Lost lake directly across from the "narrows" where sullivan empties into Kabe...there's also a couple of sand bars/edges in nebraska bay..durring a normal spring eyes tend to remain shallow depending on wind and water temps..med silver shinners very good early bait..

Aquaman,
The guides will generally take you to the windward side/current fed side of a reef
when the weather and bottom structure permit. A few of the guides I know well will set you up on the gravel/sand portion of a reef and try to keep you out of the rocks. If you fish Kab with jig heads, bottom bouncers, or slip sinkers you can spend more time tying on terminal tackle then you do fishing due to snags.

For what its worth, Tom Cod bay is usually hot for the first couple weeks of opening only then it dies off except for pike.

Tom Cod is shallow, 18' max. Mud bottom and weedy as the bay warms up. Only one rock pile and it gets alot of attention. That west end is no doubt, usually the best fishing in May. As the water warms the bite moves to mid lake and eventually down towards the river and Nam. If fishing the Tom Cod end don't overlook Bittersweet Island
and the three sister islands.

Good luck, guts <}}}}}}><

Thanks guts! I'll be hounding you guys for info over in the Kab-Nam forum in May. We're going memorial week, and last year we were midlake - between Sugarbush Island and Nebraska Bay. Before we hired laVerne & discovered we didn't know squat, we were fishing the big flats west of Wooden Frog - sounds like we were a couple of weeks late!

Okay, so sounds like on humps/bars/reefs it's just like shore - work the windward side. Is this true when it's deep, as well? (25' - 30')
If I put your info & MMs info together, I could say "yes, it applies deep as well, but only if the wind has been up and steady for a while". Am I on the right track?

We fished Kabe last year and had terrible luck (along w/ most of the rest of the lake-shoulda been here last year type thing). The one thing that was productive but very hard to fish was trolling cranks. We didnt have lead or proper weights and were fishing 3 out of a boat, but for the time that we were able to keep the baits in 20' of water, they were definately producing.

Hey Aquaman!
Didn't I see you with some chick in a red, white, and blue one piece number flying in an invisible jet?.... I can say that because we are "SuperFriends." Anyhoo....

I would say that if the wind was going steady and had been for some time, I would exhaust the shallow possibilities before I ventured deep. I don't know Kab at all; so it may have some peculiarities I'm not aware of, however.

And Jonny is just fine. Everything went well and he should be back home Thurs night. I should send an e-mail but I got to get off the computor. Later sir.

The jet's invisible - how did you see it? Not even Supes can see it! That was no chick - that was an Amazon!

GREAT TO HEAR!!!! I wish you all well and speedy (get some sleep!) and I hope to see ya soon! Buffalo is about 60% clear (northeast to southwest) and my boat & trailer should be legal soon.

Thanks for the info. I don't imagine Kab walleye are that much different from any other walleye in a similiar body of water. I hope the water levels are up up there end of May, 'cause last year working the reefs was a little spooky with a big fiberglass boat. Got nervous when the finder showed big rocks 2' down. Doesn't help your confidence when the guide says "I've hit every rock on this lake at least twice."
