new trolling motor only does 1.2 mph

bignet

Question

I put a new 70lb 24v v2 with ipilot on a champion 19ft fish hunter I bought the bout used last winter and it had like a 46 pound older power drive that was 24volt it was wired with all the right plugs and breakers and even had an on board charger so I just connected the new troller to the plug using the 24 volt pin and the ground every thing works but it will only run 1.2 max speed is it possible it is wired wrong and only running 12v the power level says full on the motor and the batteries are new I was going to check plug with my multimeter but I cannt find it any help would be great

It sure sounds like something is wrong. I would not run your new motor until you are sure what your voltage is coming out of that plug. Is it possible that you have the batteries wired in parallel instead of in series ? That is the one way you could have 12 volts at the receptacle instead of 24volts.

It's also possible you grossly underpowered that boat. A buddy of mine runs a 19' Champ Fish Hunter and has the 101 on it. I have a 19' Champ bass boat and run a 101 on it. Both top out around 3.5 mph with the trolling motor. 1.2 mph seems pretty slow, though. You may have hooked something up wrong. If I were you, though, I'd be returning that trolling motor and getting something that will actually do the job for that boat. 70 pounds of thrust is not enough for that boat, trust me.
