fishing advice? Atikokan, Mine centre area

Recommended Posts

Well I was wondering if anyone knows the area between Mine Center, Atikokan, and north of these cities. I work for Northern tier, and just need spots to fish i know these areas pretty good. so im not a green horn to these area of fishing but i would like some guidenace or a little mentoring on lakes that are better then other, and spots to fish. Im not asking for your hot spots! just lakes that would be worth fishing, and lakes that i should just paddle across.Im in duluth right now so if you need help chopping wood or other stuff around the house i can help. i can also talk to Northern tier and see if they can give you a little something for the effort! remember this is for the kids and not for my personal gain. i want every kid to catch fish! thank you

Wish I could be of more help, but the only lake I have actually fished in the Atikokan area is Crystal Lake, a few miles to the east of Atikokan. The lake is crystal clear and loaded with Smallmouth, though the average size is not particularly good, at least for me. But as far as action goes, it was incredible. You can catch 100 small bass with out much problem, and you will see tons of bass as well, at least in June when I was there. Might be a great action lake for kids.

Good evening rkhinrichs,

I've fished the chain of lakes from Crilly dam down to the mouth of the Seine river on Rainy Lake, mostly in the spring and fall. Try Shoal Grassy lakes and you should have some fun. The landing to get into Shoal is south of the Mine Center sign. Good luck!

It has been a LONG time but years ago I fished Weller, Tupman nad a few others north of Atikokan. I believe the roads in are pretty good and we caught lots of walleyes. Unfortunatly this report is about 30 years old.

Good morning rkhinrichs,

Shoal Lake is straight south of Mine Center. It's a gravel road and a gravel landing along a small beach. Grassy Lake is the next lake to the west which flows into a small section of Seine River which flows into Rainy.

Morning Gentalmen,

Both Tuppman and Weller are up Hwy 502 which is 25km(15 miles) east of Fort Frances then north about 20km. Mine Center is 60 km east of Fort Frances. I've caught fish in both but prefer Rainy Lake.

Muskie, you have jogged my memory. Now I remember where those lakes are. We used to fish Birch Lake near Attikoken and a couple other smaller lakes north on 611 just past the power plant. Back then, 611 didn't go all the way to 17. I believe it died just past Brown's. The names escape me but I will look at a map and see if I can remember. It was a long time ago.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
