4 stroke vs. 2 stroke

I have a Honda tiller 75 hp.
-Zero smoke so if you like to backtroll its awesome, because you don't breathe smoke all day.
-Great gas mileage.
-I can troll all day for walleyes with the thing, and it never gets loaded up.

I have never once needed any service of any sort.

I love it. I have had Hondas since 1994. I would highly recommend one. Although, I have never owned a 2 stroke, so I could be a bit skewed...

Same boat 15.5ft crestliner. My previous motor was a '88 Merc. 70hp. Currently, I have a '02 Honda 50 4-stroke.

To me the biggest advantages are the gas cumsuption and noise.

Most bigger/newer outboads have oil injection, so that is kind of a non-issue. Just remember to add oil from time to time, eh.

Hard for me to compare power as there is a 20hp difference between the two. But I'd have to say the top end would be close between a 2 & 4 stroke, but the 2-smoke would have a better low end, more torque. A consideration if you enjoy waterskiing or some such.

You can certainly troll down with a 4-stoke but only within limits. For instance, a 70hp four isn't going to troll down for a 14ft Lund. This can be problem, because a four stroke small enough to troll down with, might leave you wanting as your zipping across the lake.

I'll never go back!

I love my 115 Yamaha 4 stroke. Quiet, trolls all day without any problems, no smoke, way better on gas, no mixing oil.
Draw backs are size and weight and not as much tork out of the hole but its more than I need on my 17' Explorer 2004.
I wont go back to a 2 stroke unless I someday by a Ranger 620 and need a 225 horse or something.

I have a 2003 140hp Johnson 4-stroke on a Alumacraft 185 tourny pro. That motor is sweet.
It is very quiet, doesnt use too much gas, and its starts right away just like a car!
The only 2 draw backs it has is; the're a heavier motor and dont have as quick of a hole shot as a 2-stroke.

When we first got our boat it had a aluminum prop on it. It had a lousy hole shot and the RPM's weren't very high, so the top speed was a little low. We then got a stainless steel rapture prop and now that thing is sweet. It gets a really good hole shot and and at WOT RPM's are at 6200 and that thing just howls across the lake! Its a sweet motor. grin.gif I cant imagine what a new 200hp Merc Verado would do on a boat like that. tongue.gif

I recently purchased a new boat and motor. Had a reliable 86' Evinrude 2 stroke. The new 4 stroke is a 70hp Suzuki EFI. I personally would never go back to 2 stroke.Crisp starting. No smoke,No mixing oil/gas. Backtroll all day. They troll down to nothing. Quiet. Good fuel milage. Not quite as quick out of the hole, but a stainless prop makes a big difference in performance. Top end is comperable. The initial investment is kinda expensive, but with EPA regs changes comming, if you're serious, jump in and buy one.

Actually I'd opt for the new HDPI 2 strokes. Same gas efficiency, uses very little oil, burns cleaner that the 4 strokes and just as quietly. Less maintence and moving parts and lighter as well. Currently available in the Evinrude E-Tec, Yammi HDPI and the Mertcury Optimax.

The E-tec can be set down to 500 rpms for slow trolling if you need that without affecting top end.

Bombardier is releasing the ETEC's in larger motors soon, I believe. I think the 175, 200, 225 etc.. Those would be sweet, especially if they troll down to low RPM's. Not much need for a kicker anymore, possibly??

I still love my 2 strokes. I like the roar and the power!! It's like a Harley thing. LOL

    • Yeah it was a beatdown
    • Your kid needs to stay with him!👍
    • My kid was eating in Beverly Hills and ran into this guy. Talked to him a bit and wished him luck in the game tonight.
    • 🤔as a recovering machinist!🤣🤣that must make me a recovering welder!
    • As a recovering machinist, I can appreciate that.  If the spec is 0.001 - 0.0015, then clearly the correct measurement is 0.00125, duh…
    • I just figured that it is easy enough to just get a 3 bank so when the boat is not in use I can keep all 3 batteries charged. I have not bough a charger yet, maybe I will give it some more thought. Edit: After thinking this over, with the size, weight, and heat output of the charger (as well as the cost) I think it makes sense to just buy a 2 bank charger, I have a smaller charger i can use on the starting battery when the boat is sitting at home. Forgive me, for i am a retired engineer and I have to obsess over everything...
    • Congrats on the motor!  I think you’ll like it.   I can’t say much on the charger location but I’ve seen them under the lid in back compartments and under center rod lockers.  160 degrees is more than I expected to hear.   Curious why you’re opting for a 3 bank charger with a 24V trolling motor.  Unless you don’t feel you be running you big motor enough to keep that battery up as well?
    • I did buy an Minnkota Ulterra, thanks for the recommendations. I had a bunch of Cabela"s bucks saved up, which helped. Now i need to get an onboard battery charger. Where do you guys mount these things in your boat? The manufacturer I am looking at {Noco genius) says tht their 3-bank charger will run at 160 degrees, seems like a lot of heat in an enclosed compartment? Thanks for any input on this.
    • You're very lucky a troop of Sea Monkey's didn't carry you away.
    • Wasn't terrible at a state park beach. Antelope island maybe.  I wouldn't recommend it as a beach destination tho.  Figured I was there, I'm getting in it.
