2004 Silverado Oil Consumption

Recommended Posts

2004 Silverado, 5.3 with 114,000 miles. I have been changing oil at about 5,000 miles. I am using Amsoil 5w30 XL. I usually need to add about 3/4 of a quart about 4,000 miles. I don't think that's excessive. I talked to an Amsoil rep at the Ice Fishing show last December and he said I could go to 10w30 to decrease the oil consumption. I said "wouldn't that decrease the mileage and cold engine (winter) lubrication" and he said "not much". What are your thoughts on the amount the truck is burning and what the Amsoil rep said?

So, if you let it got to 5K miles around change time you'd be down close to 1 full quart?

If so, I'd let it go like that and just one less quart to drop at change time.

Anyplace between the add and full marks is OK, doesn't need to be "topped off", IMO.
