HD with Side imaging Question

I am looking at upgrading to either a Lowrance or Hummingbird locator. Does the side imaging transducer replace the other one or does the 83/200 ducer still do the down sonar if you install the side imaging?

With Lowrance systems you will have separate transducers for SI/DI and traditional sonar. With Humminbird, it is all built into a single transducer.

Thanks, I was thinking of maybe buying an HDS this year and than the side imaging next but didn't want to pay for a ducer i wasn't going to use....

The reason HB uses one is you have to buy the SI/DI with the unit. Lowrance version is an add on, hence the 2 ducers. I got to see each last year side by side and Lawrance had the clear edge in picture quality on the SI/DI, not sure how the 2011 units stack up.
