Hey guys,

I would like to take my dad smallie fishing around the Iron River area during early May. I've never fished WI and would appreciate any tips you guys might have on where to get started. If you would prefer not to post here on the site feel free to email me at [email protected].

Thanks for the help.

Stacker,

If smallies are what you are after, I would hit up the Pike Lake Chain... Lots of bronzies in there..

If you are interested, I have a guide that I work with that knows that lake inside and out... He could help your learning curve tremendously.. Deep clear lake, can be tough at times.

Owen, Pike Chain, and Diamond are good. I always had great luck on Pike Chain until the last two years. It seems the average size is down. Lots of 12-13 inch Smallies. The Largemouth population is up, but the size is also small. I have noticed that the Rusty Crayfish population is down. Less forage equals smaller Bass ? Bass fishing is catch and release only until June 18th.

Thanks for the help so far guys. I'm definitely looking for a lake with good numbers of the fish in the 18" range with a good possibility of a 20+" fish. Also, I'm not set on staying right around Iron River, would probably travel within an hour of there. As far as C bay, for this trip I would like to stick to some smaller lakes. If anyone is interested I would be willing to share some tips for Mille Lacs smallies.

Thanks Again.

Stacker,

Pike Lake Chain still has decent smallies in it - but, I do agree - size structure has too a hit lately. Same can be said with Owen as well. Along with those two lakes, check out the Eau Claire Chain for big fish..

But, yes, if you want big fish and big fish consistantly, the bay is where its at.

Got out to the chain this wonderful weekend and had a great time getting into bass and a couple of walleyes... Bass were defin active of steep drops, and the hot ticket was soft plastics. Nothing too big, but got to get my better half into some fish! full-17656-21499-6_16_12.jpg
