Trailer covers

jiggin9

Question

I have a '98 Lund 1700 Pro Sport and I'd like to purchase a new cover for it. The one that came with the boat is a Taylor Made two piece snap on cover. One in front of and one behind the windshield. The cover is a pain to get on, especially when it isnt that warm out. Does Lund make covers or are there any good custom covers out there worth the money? I think the strap style would be much easier to install and take off. It needs to be a trailerable as well. I've seen one too many balloon covers going down the highway to not want anything like that. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

If you travel a lot with your cover on get a good snap on cover or a real nice strap cover. I prefer a good snap on cover. There is no chance of wear on paint from the straps.

Canvas Craft and Proctor Canvas out of Duluth do very good work.

I'd suggest checking out / contacting Dave at North Country Canvas in Crystal. He's done 3 custom snaps for me over the years. He makes very nice custom Tie-down covers as well. Fairly priced, very meticulous, Top Gun Material, and outstanding "small-town"-like service. Good luck....

Thanks for the replies everyone. I'll look in to each and compare some prices. I've never had a strap down boat cover before. I guess I didn't think of the straps rubbing on the paint. Good point. The snap on cover has worked decent but several of the snaps have come off and the replacement ones I've installed didn't last too long either. Doing this in colder weather only makes it more frustrating too.

Jiggin, ya, they can be a touch ornery in the cold, but I'll never own anything but a tight fitting snap-on. I've never, in 10 or so years, had a snap come off any of my covers from N.C.C.

Once you have a system down for taking it off the same way every time, they are really easy and fast, IMO, to put on.

I first tack down the "four corners", if you will. Then I go around the boat snapping every other snap. If you start at one corner, and work your way around doing every snap, it's frustrating and way slower.

I also find it almost easier and faster to do it myself. Most people not familiar with snap-ons find them a PITA. I gaurentee I can take mine off, put it in the back of my truck, and put it back on my boat as fast, if not faster, than any strap-on cover, and I don't have to worry about straps rubbing my paint or gelcoat. Again, good luck....

If you call Dave at N.C.C., tell him Mike G., with the Skeeter, sent ya. He's a good guy. Straight forward...no Bee "S".. If he suggests doing something, he's always been right. I had to do a couple things "my" way, and he's wound up altering them back to the way he originally suggested, and it was the right way to go.

I paid about 600.00 for a 10 year cover 15 years ago at Canvas Craft and it was the best money I ever spent. I still get compliments on the fit. On and off in a minute with rubber straps and it still hasn't rubbed off any paint in 15 yrs.
