ib_jigged
Ok, got the new boat home and I want to install a stereo. What is the best way to cut/drill holes for the speakers? I plan to put them in the back battery compartments so it will be through wood, but with carpet on them. Do I just use a large hole saw? Will that catch the carpet and pull it out? Or cut with a jigsaw? Thanks,
Esox_Magnum
I use my roto zip or dremle with a circle cutting attachment.
Tator2k
I would mark where the holes would go and cross-cut the carpet and peel it back away from the wood to be able to cut your holes.
solbes
I installed a stereo two years ago. Used a hole saw that was the right size. Ended up being a real snap. My boat had aluminum under the carpet, but otherwise very similar. A roto-zip with the circle cutting attachment might also work well. I would not go the jigsaw route. Now installing the stereo itself, which I thought would be easy, was anything but. I remember trying to pull that steering wheel off the first time
SkunkedAgain
I've installed tons of car stereos, and they are a cinch compared to boat stereos. Don't forget to think about where all the rain is going to go when your boat is sitting on the water in a downpour. As for cutting the speakers, I just paid $30 at the big hardware store for a 5 1/4inch hole saw. It cut through the aluminum in my boat very well. The speakers look great, but as said before, the head unit was a GIANT pita.
Tator2k
I just tore out the 16 year old cassette deck out of mine and modified the console bracket to hold the new deck. What took a while was splicing the old harness into the new one so I didn't have to pull all new wire.
ib_jigged
Solbes, The boat I am installing in is a 2010 1725 Rebel XL Sport. I plan to put the 2 speakers in the same spot you have in the back. Where did you send the wires through to the console? I already pulled the wheel. Loosened the nut and used a puller to pull off, nothing to it. thanks
