Musky stories

Recommended Posts

Couple seasons ago I put the boat in one night with APC and our dogs. Went to crank the motor and my starter battery was dead, so I grabbed the jumper cables out of the truck to jump it off one of my trolling motor batteries. Outboard started fine, I didn't unhook the jumpers right away and after a few seconds everything started smoking, instrument panel, under the outboard hood, battery wires, everything.

I didn't know whether to run or stay there and try to get the instrument panel off and extinguish the fire. I stayed and started unscrewing the panel and the smoke stopped coming out after I got the jumper cables unhooked and killed the motor. I expected everything to be melted down but things were all still functional at this point. So we loaded up, restarted the outboard again and idled away from the ramp.

I decided to leave my GPS and sonar off since by starter battery was so low, and let it charge up a bit as we were running. It was dark by this time but I had fished this lake a bunch of times and knew where I was going. I sped up and reached back for the trim switch to trim the motor down, it wouldn't go and I couldn't get on plane even though I was giving it full gas and holding the trim switch down. I realized a little too late that I was plowing through shallow sand. We slowed down and my trim sounded like it was shot, but did lower the motor down enough so we could run. We pulled up at the first spot I chose, close to shore since my lights were very dim due to the low battery. Trim just cracked and gurgled but we were fine at least for the rest of evening with it.

Had a nice fish follow on the first spot, decided to run across the lake and try another shallow spot. Got over there just fine, made a few casts, and my lab pup, probably 15 weeks old at the time starts yelping bloody murder. Caught a spinnerbait hook in the leg, point didn't go all the way through though. We grabbed him and calmed him down, but we knew we had to get the hook barb through so we could cut it off. Not really proud of it but I don't think it would have been much easier to take him in to shore and the vet, so I pushed it through the flesh on his leg and cut it off. Bruised but not broken, and we're back to fishing.

Not 5 minutes later, Tony has a fish eat at the boat. He's also got his dog with him, who instantly jumps on top of the fish. I don't know who in the boat at ths point was more confused - us, the dogs, or the fish, but Tony managed to take the fish on a few laps around the boat to keep it away from the dog, handed me the rod, and pulled his dog back in. We did get the fish in the net. Not an easy mess to sort out in the dark.

We caught two more fish in the next hour and decided we'd had enough for a short outing. That's my story.

Goldie, no stories of your own??

Well I've got a couple fun stories to look back on in the last couple years.

Last year I fished with Shoot2Kill and thought we'd secured the rods in good but apparently my rod cover catches some air. Especially driving into 50 mph gusts! All of a sudden I hear, dude your rod flew out on a busy highway. We recovered it with some road rash. Got to the lake tested it and it was working fine. Pulled out a custom bucktail I tied up and 5 min later landed a 44" fish! Saltist's are indestructible smile

I was on a lake about two years ago fishing solo and beached my boat next to the cattails after a bad morning and didn't think twice since the wind was too my back. I got the trailer backed up to the ramp and my boat was drifting away from the dock!! I guess I didn't run it up far enough and the wind had switched. $hit! I ran to the dock and it was about 10 feet away and moving farther. I quick pulled out my cell phone and wallet, jumped in and swam out to it. Oh man, I won't make that mistake again!

The lakes haven't iced out yet but with the expo tomorrow I'm getting a little more pumped up for the season!

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
