this is a general question

should I be able to see the gps location of my unit when it is setting on my kitchen table. I want to preview what lakes are available on the unit as it comes from the factory prior to purchasing a lake chip

As long as you don't have a metal roof you should be able to get gps reception in your house. Doesn't always work but it should (or could) work.

But, if you're scrolling around on the map, you should not need to have the gps locked in to your current location.

If you're having trouble getting reception at the kitchen table, find a south-facing window and set up there. I live in an apartment with one floor above me and get reception when I'm at a west-facing window. (I don't have any with southern exposure.)

It may take a while, though, so power up your unit and set it down for a few minutes while you watch a commercial break on TV or something.

I actually use mine to correct my drifts. I set up where I think I need to be in order to pass over the structure I want to hit, check out the screen at the end of the drift to see where I actually went, and then correct when I set up again. Obviously it's not an exact thing, but it beats the pants off just hoping for the best.
