Merc outboard ?

Recommended Posts

I own a 99 Merc 150 EFI outboard. There is a filter on the drivers side of the motor under the cowl. Is this just a fuel filter or does it catch any moisture that may be in the system? How hard is it to change and how often should it be changed?

The oil filter looking thing with a tube out the bottom? That is the fuel filter/water seperator. You should drain it during your regular maintenance and change it after every 100 hours or so. Your owners manual should explain those steps.

FYI - if you ever get a single tone beeeeeeeep and you can't figure out why, take off the cowl, turn the key on (no need to start motor) and look for a single LED red light right in the middle front, like behind Black Max himself wink if that light is ON then you have water in the fuel system. Take the water sep off, drain, put it back on and beep should be gone shortly. You will have to do that several times (the beep will tell you when) until you get water out of system/tank. After it stops beeping, like after a few more trips, put a new filter on.

If the light is NOT on, then it is likely the oil pump, and that is not good...

I.e. our gas fill is in the splash well... stooopid place, heh, cause if you don't get the cap screwed in TIGHT water can get in tank. Then the beeeeep wink
