Trout fishing in beaver ponds NE of Craig,CO

Recommended Posts

Any tips on high country beaver pond fishing in general? Line, lures etc. Small rapalas, in line spinners, colors?

Would do spinning tackle. I am comfortable finding my own spots, but advice on tactics/lures would be great.

Thanks! lakevet

I packed a spinning rod and inline spinners on an elk hunt near Meeker a few years ago-I fished a pretty large pond near camp a couple times and came up empty-Of course while up in the really high terrain without my rod I saw trout in multiple ponds. Also saw some BIG trout in tiny streams you'd swear couldn't support a fish-Our packer claimed the way to get them was with worms-We were there during unseasonably warm mid October weather

Spinners will work, although some of the fish in ponds can be pretty skittish because of the crystal clear water. You might want to consider a flyrod if you have one. Check the rocks around the edge of the pond. Many of the high elevation ponds will have an abundance of scuds. Especially if they've been established for awhile. I caught this football brookie in a high country pond near Gunnison/Lake City.

Here's a youtube I took in Zirkel Wilderness. Fishing with my grand-daughter for cutthroat. Lots of healthy fish. Used Fish Creek Spinners - Armadillo's and Nitromites. Pretty bad video skills but good music!
