New fish house furnace options

traveler

Recommended Posts

I finally picked up a fishhouse (shell only) and am looking to minimally finish it...likely just a couple foldup bunks, maybe a table. I want to keep it pretty much open for hauling/work use.

I do want to put in a furnace. 3 types/styles I'm seeing so far:

1. Direct vent wall furnace...sticks out 9 inches from a wall, appx 20 inches square.

2. Floor mount direct vent...maybe 1 ft square by 2 feet, mounts on floor, probably under a bunk or cabinet. Although I don't plan on building in much, I'm sure i could find a spot for this type.

3. "blue flame" type...not direct vent, instructions say fresh air must be provided (window cracked or similar) This one is 1/2 the price of the other 2. Also mounts on the wall ands seems about the same size as #1.

4. Portable model of # 3. Could then also be used elsewhere (with ventilation) I don't have that need currently, but ya never know...

Any other options? Opinions? The house is a 6.5 x 12 plus V.

Direct vent wall mount for sure if it were mine. I'd avoid one of the blue flame type heaters at all costs, unless you like sitting in a stinky sauna. You should have plenty of time this summer to find a good deal on a nice vented wall mount. My personal opinion also, is that you would be much better off with a wall heater, and a nice 12v ceiling fan(depending on ceiling height) than one of the forced air type heaters. This way you can use it without draining your batteries (or even without batteries if need be) and it will be much, much quieter. The noise from a forced air heater would get sickening really fast in a house that size. You could probably even get by with a wall mount and no fan at all. We have a house about the same size and it stays toasty warm from floor to ceiling.

#2 is forced air...and it requires a 12 volt battery to run. Not that thats a big deal, so do the lights, but I'm thinking running a furnace fan would draw it down faster (obviously). There was a very small 12 vt. fan in the house I rented this year and it really seemed to help distribute the heat. Not sure how many times a year it'll be slept in, but a few for sure.

About the wall heaters...nothing circulates the aire, correct? Just ambient heat? How high are they usually mounted? Much trouble to install? 14,000 btu is the smallest I've seen, even that sounds like a lot. Are there smaller out there?

thanks guys....

Traveler,

You are correct, the only thing that circulates the air is natural convection. It doesn't take too long to warm up a house, though. Both my dad and my uncle have wall heaters that work very well in houses about the same size as yours. I will take a look tomorrow and see what brand, size, etc. they are. Both are mounted with the bottom of the heater a few inches off of the floor. Keeping the heater low is an advantage as it aids in the convection of air, as I mentioned earlier. Watch this thread and I'll post more info for you.

The Empire heater I just looked at has a min. 4 inches of the floor. You need that to hook up the gas and still have some kind of drip leg under it. It is a wall mount dirct vent heater. They do make a 10,000btu one also.

In a smaller house like that, I would probably stay away from the forced air. I have one in mine, and love it, but you'll need at least 1 battery for every 2 days. If you are thinking of a weekend, you'll need a minimum of 2 batteries, and maybe a 3rd, depending on what else you have hooked up to it. The other option would be a generator, but then you are somewhat losing portability.

The Empire DV is the most common one. I'd probably do the Empire DV215 in that house.

Is there much difference between the DV and the MV130? Other than a themostat? The MV is nearly 300 bucks cheaper...

Thanks for all the replys guys.

    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
