Buying a F250???

I'm looking at possibly buying a used first gen F250 with a v10. I've never owned a diesel truck before, so I'm not sure the right questions to ask about it. Anything in particular I should look at or for? Do diesel trucks require more maintenance? The truck I'm looking at has about 75k miles, so it it gonna need a rebuild or major service (engine, tranny, timing belt, etc...) at 90k like most regular cars?

04 is beyond the spark plug problems. But you will notice that it doesnt get very good millage. But if your buying a v10, I am sure millage isnt what the truck will be used for. If you can get an 02-03 7.3L diesel, that would be my suggestion.

I have a 2002 with the v-10 and 10-11 mpg is right on the money. In summer you may gain a little but not much. If you pull a camper or enclosed trailer with a big front that pushes a lot of air plan on 8-9 mpg. Mine has 73,000 miles and other than ball joints and rebuilding the clutch packs in the traction loc rear axle its been a great truck. I mainly use this truck for trailer towing which is a 27' camper or flatbed with antique tractors and it works good.

ihc is right on with the mileage numbers. It depends on what you want to use it for. If you' re looking to get a big truck as a hauler, the F250 with the v10 is a good option. Its just another gas motor so you already know what kind of maintenance it will need. The big trucks are any different than any other pickup.

I did forget to mention one problem with the v-10 is the exhaust manifold studs break off but I think ford had that problem on all gas 4.6,5.4,and 6.8 engines. I have 4 broke on mine but it has not started to leak but I know it will. If anyone knows a good way to remove broken studs from an aluminum head while in the truck let me know.

Ford has updated studs, that dont brake. I never had a huge problem getting them out. Either I will use a left hand drill bit, or weld a nut to the stud, and wrench it out. They normally come right out.

Good to know the studs are not hardened and can be drilled. I have 2 that are broke off a little in past the edge of the head and figured they would be tough to get a nut welded on to. Thanks for the info!

    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
