Extra gas to Canada?

Any stipulation on bringing extra gas tanks into Canada? I thought there used to be a rule like 1 extra tank per motor, but haven't been asked lately and will be bringing a lot next week.

It's my understanding that you can have your vehicle full and your boat full and that's it. If you're using the six gallon outboard tanks, I can't imagine them objecting to having two of them.

The Border Patrol will gennerally ask you if you have any extra gas for the boat. If you have a built in tank the answer is NO, unless you do have extra cans. If you have a 6 gallon tank and have 3 extra cans the answer is.... 24 gallons in the boat. Only once in 25 yrears have I been charged the duty. The best policy is to be honest. If you lie they are going to stick it to you, if they should decide to check.

In the forty plus years we have been going up, usually entering at Rainy River, we have had to pay duty once for an extra 6 gallon can of gas. This cost about the same as if we had bought the gas in Canada. Now we have our boat full with its 34 gallons capacity with no problems. If you need extra gas it probably best to fill your cans in Canada.

Several years ago we took in all our gas and payed the duty. Seems like its was cheaper and we knew the quality of our gas. Might want to do some research and see if it's cheaper that way. I don't know.

Went up during Memorial Day and asked the locals up in I-Falls and they said there are no longer any regs on this. I brought over an extra can and there were no gas questions at the crossing. Things you can't bring over are blueberry's, potato's, dogfood to name a few right now.

I just went up last Thursday, the 22nd, and I had two 6 gallon boat tanks and two extra regular six gallon tanks, all full, in my boat, in the open for them to see. They never asked or questioned the extra cans. The gal smiled after the usual questions, and said have a safe trip. I also brought up the same amount last month with no questions asked. Last year some of my fishing buddies brought up a 30 gallon barrel of gas in the back of their truck. Customs asked about it, but let it go.

So I would say go for it. If they ask...you're busted, and have to pay the duty. If not, you just saved some serious $$$$.
