WHATS WRONG WITH PEOPLE

A couple of years ago my Father and his elderly friends were fishing a lake near Brainerd. Some guys fished near them and starting throwing small perch on the ice. The other guys were getting ready to leave and a member of my father's group mentioned they shouldn't just litter the ice and remove the fish. When my Dad got to their truck when they were leaving they found the group had dumped the pail of small perch on the hood of the truck. Luckily a friend had gotten the license plate numer and they reported it to DNR.

End result; They got what they deserved--a ticket!

sometimes they get caught!

....and how is a license increase supposed to stop this behavior?

I could be wrong, but I think the thought was that if we increase fees, then we will have more revenue to hire more CO's, maybe if some of the people that trash the lakes get tickets, they will stop.

I carry a plastic bag with me when I take the dogs for a walk just for garbage, some advise, now with open water season coming up, when cleaning the boat of weeds and empting the water, also secure the garbage in the boat, better yet move into the auto, whenever I am at a boat launch or a WMA, we take the time to pick up the area. I was told growing up, too alway leave an area better then found.

Personally, I'm more suprised when I don't have to pick up trash left behind than I am when I do. I had to replace the blades in my auger(1 1/2 seasons of use) because twice this winter I hit a beer can that was hidden in the frozen slush, and a block of wood. I keep a trash bag in my sled all winter, and it usually fills up with other people's garbage, and not my own.

Also, I smoke, nasty habit that I have yet to successfully quit. When I am out fishing, I always have a bottle or coffe cup for my butts. I also have an empty pop bottle in my truck that I toss my butts in while driving.

I used to work in retail and I can believe everthing everyone is saying. People can stand their and tell u a complete lie even when you call them out on it. Also they just think that someone else will pick up their mess, if it doesnt come out of their pocket they dont care.

Unfortunately this is not just a fishing / sportman issue. A lot of people today simply look out for just themselves and do not care about what does not directly affect them. The days of people looking out for one another, sticking up for each other, and doing the right thing even in the face of adversity seem to be fading a little more every year.

It's sad when this manifests itself in the very simple task of cleaning up after yourself on the ice. It's not time consuming, or difficult, to leave it like you found it.
